How We Calculate Air Fryer Times

Our calculator gives starting ranges by combining oven temperature reduction, time reduction, food type, frozen state and air fryer style.

About the editor

The calculation in plain English

The calculator starts with the oven or packet instruction, lowers the temperature, shortens the time into a range, then adjusts for food category, frozen state, air fryer style and model behaviour. It deliberately returns a range because air fryers do not cook identically.

  • We reduce temperature first.
  • We shorten time into a range.
  • We add check points and safety notes instead of pretending one number fits every air fryer.

Temperature

Conventional oven instructions usually begin around 20C lower in an air fryer. Fan oven instructions need a smaller drop because they already use moving air.

Time

Most foods start around 20-30% shorter than oven time, then move up or down based on density, frozen state and air fryer type.

Check point

The check-from time appears before the final range so the user can turn, shake, test the centre or stop early.

Why we use ranges instead of one number

A single exact number looks confident, but it can be misleading. A small basket air fryer, a dual drawer and an oven-style model can give different results at the same setting.

  • Thin food can finish before the lower end of the range.
  • Dense frozen food can need the higher end or a centre check.
  • Crowded baskets slow browning and airflow.

What changes the result most

The strongest variables are thickness, starting temperature, moisture, coating, basket crowding and the distance between the food and heating element.

  • Breaded foods brown quickly, so the check time matters.
  • Meat and reheated food need centre checks, not just surface colour.
  • Oven-style air fryers often need slightly more time than compact baskets.

Practical examples

How a normal conversion behaves

200C for 30 minStart around 180C for roughly 20-25 min, then check early.
Fan 180C for 25 minUse a gentler drop because the source instruction is already fan-assisted.
Frozen packet foodKeep a cautious check point because the outside can brown before the centre is hot.

Method limit

This is calculation guidance, not lab testing. Reviewed test batches are labelled separately from calculated guidance in the evidence log.

FAQ

Quick answers

Why does the site avoid guarantees?

Air fryer results vary by model, food size and load, so the safer answer is a cautious range plus an early check.

What makes the guidance UK-focused?

The site uses UK wording, Celsius temperatures, p/kWh cost inputs and common UK food/packet scenarios.

How should I report a problem?

Use the contact page with the food, original instruction, air fryer model and what happened.
